This course is designed to develop competencies to allow Fire Protection workers to be able to certify fire protection systems. It will provide participants with a range of knowledge and skills to complete the following activities:

- a visual inspection of a fire protection system, and detection of any altered, damaged, or compromised aspects within the system, and
- identification of the fire protection system’s compliance with Australian and        international standards, Building Code of Australia requirements and    manufacturer’s specifications, and
- the provision of advice or completion of a report, including a certificate, which    states the compliance or non-compliance of fire protection systems.

REQUIREMENTS FOR QBCC LICENSING
Minimum requirements:
- Certificate III in Carpentry; or
- Certificate III in Walling & Ceiling Lining

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (White Card), or another unit deemed current and equivalent.
  • It is also recommended that, prior to commencement, participants demonstrate that they have sufficient work experience in a job role involving:
    • the application of relevant technical knowledge and skills of fire safety systems and fire safety sub-systems with depth in some areas, through a minimum of 2 years’ experience as licensed Fire Protection tradesperson
    • ability to apply discretionary judgement and decision making under limited supervision or guidance
    • high level language, literacy and numeracy levels; sufficient to interpret complex documents, prepare written reports

DURATION

  •  The total duration for this program is 106 hours. 55 of these hours are dedicated to classroom, simulated practical or on the job learning. The remaining 51 hours are dedicated to the conduct of assessment both simulated and in workplace.
  • Training – combination of face to face and online and on the job training under the direction of a workplace supervisor
  • Assessment – theory assessment and practical observations conducted on site or in simulated environments

The aim of this qualification is to provide certification procedures for the installation and maintenance of fire protection equipment to persons working within the fire protection industry. Graduates will be able to demonstrate detailed and specialised skills and knowledge of the certification of the installation and maintenance of passive fire equipment. 

In addition, participants will gain the knowledge and skills to conduct visual inspections to identify if the fire protection system or equipment has been installed correctly or inappropriately altered, damaged or compromised by changes to the occupancy, environment or building. Further, participants will gain the skills to prepare a fire protection certification statement or report for one or more of the above areas.

Clients enrolling into this training program are trade qualified carpenters or wall and ceiling liners whose responsibility involves the installation, maintenance and quality assurance of fire rated lining systems. These groups hold the applicable certificate III qualification completed through apprenticeship arrangements and are employed or self employed in the industry.
